Addo is a small town in the Sundays River Valley, 75 km north-east of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and an hour off the N2. It is best known as the gateway to Addo Elephant National Park — South Africa's third-largest national park and the only one where you can reasonably expect to see the "Big Seven" (the conventional Big Five plus southern right whale and great white shark off the adjacent coast). For conference planners, Addo means one specific thing: bush-incentive and small-conference territory, with delegates who go on game drives between sessions.

Where conferences happen

Addo conferencing is dominated by lodges, country houses, and game-park accommodation rather than purpose-built conference centres. Kuzuko Lodge sits inside the park's northern Nyathi concession with capacity for ~40 delegates. Woodall Country House & Spa handles small executive sessions (up to 30) in a citrus-estate setting. Casa Mia Health Spa and East Cape Game Lodge add to the inventory in the surrounding valley. Total active inventory on Conference Venues SA: 6 properties, all in the 15–60 delegate range.

Getting there

Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) International Airport is 75 km / 1 hour south on the R335 and N2 — the only viable gateway. There is no airstrip at Addo itself. Most lodges arrange airport transfers as part of the package; otherwise, self-drive from PE is straightforward (single-lane sections in the valley but well-maintained tar throughout).

When to pick Addo

Executive offsites of 15–60 delegates where game-drive content is the differentiator. Incentive trips, leadership retreats, board strategy sessions. Addo is malaria-free, which is a meaningful selling point against equivalent bushveld destinations in Limpopo or Mpumalanga and matters for international delegates and family-inclusive trips. Not the right pick for conferences over ~60 delegates, large training programmes, or anything where the meeting room is the main event.

Climate

Eastern Cape semi-arid bushveld climate — warm to hot summers (Oct–Mar, days 28–34°C), mild dry winters (Apr–Sep, days 18–22°C, nights down to 5°C). Game viewing is best in winter when the bush is thinner and animals concentrate around water. Year-round operating; rain is sparse and brief.

What to budget

Lodge-based day packages (including game drive) run R1,800–R3,500 per delegate. Accommodation R2,200–R5,500 per room per night depending on lodge tier. Most properties package the conference + accommodation + game activities as a single all-in rate; standalone DDR is rare here. Add R2,000–R3,000 per vehicle for airport transfers.
